Network not working?

It’s not enough to purchase a high definition AV device, or system, and then expect it to deliver full potential as soon as you come home. This is partly about the quality of the image and audio, and also about the integrative potential of the devices. These both require high quality networking in order to deliver their ultimate capability.

When you implement high definition AV technologies like 4K TV and HiDef  music streaming services such as Tidal, and connecting multiple devices, network strategy becomes a factor, especially when more than one room is involved.

To work at their full potential, and to deliver the quality you paid for, these devices need to be supported by both sufficient bandwidth, and a purpose-designed network, setup in the home. This usually involves both high performance wired and wireless components.

Each additional device and service adds its own weight to the system. As new items are integrated into the house network it is wise to be sure that their draw doesn’t exceed the existing capacity of the network or current internet package. That it may still seem to work when installed and turned on can mask the fact that you may not be getting the full image and sound quality potential in the device(s).

A 4K TV set that is serviced by a low bandwidth package, delivered through an improperly established network, will only be able to deliver what is served to it. You’ll still get some of the box technology, but the integration and delivery will be limited.

What is a network?
A network is any collection of devices that are connected to share data. Whether it does so well or badly, is a question of how well the capacity of the network is matched to the needs of the devices it drives information and power to. 2011’s state-of-the-art installation is 2018’s fond memory.

If the correct wiring was done at the time the audio video system was setup, using the proper cables, that element will be fine, but if the network is inadequate, and not up to current requirements, the system will not function properly.

What a high definition network must consist of, in order to work as intended, is at minimum, a dedicated modem, with a dedicated wifi router. In a larger space, this will also include additional wireless access points set up at intervals that support the effective flow of data throughout the space, managing walls, corridors, and multiple levels if required. A specialized remote controller is also required to properly manage this system.

This system is distinctly different from having a simple cable company integrated modem/router connected to a wireless extender or series of extenders. These are strictly speaking, a series of separate networks, sometime each with their own network name.  The wifi signal is not continuously managed and has to be handed off from one extender to another as the signal drops. This is clearly not ideal. When setting the system up you want to think through the signal management carefully, including whether or not you will want outdoor coverage for the summer months.

Who does that work?
This is fairly technical work and if you’re relying on a friend to help you set it up, your best chance is if they’re a network specialist, or computer systems technician.  Typically, they are not.   This is not a single-case of beer favour however…at least not if you want it to work really well.
